How can we enable people & communities?
It came about by taking the purpose of the RMA seriously: How can we enable people & communities to provide for their economic, social, cultural (& spiritual) well-being, health & safety while protecting the environment for future generations?
The most wonderful places in the world came about because the people making the decisions were the people who would live there. Why? Because life is more than problem solving. It's their life; they want a good life.
New Zealand 's law of the land talks about enabling people and communities to provide for their health, safety and wellbeing while protecting the environment. But it usually works out to consultants convincing council officers or panels that the adverse environmental effects of their client's proposed development will be minor.
The MarketTown process begins with the people (the future villagers) and their communities (each village). It then empowers them with professional support in a highly-structured process to write a Master Plan that will enable them to provide for their health, safety and wellbeing while protecting the environment. It requires that the settlement process rather than the development process is used. This means the future villagers must participate from the onset.
